Lay tiles on the balcony correctly

The Content Of The Article:

A balcony that is often used is only really fun if it is easy to clean. You can make cleaning a lot easier by laying tiles on the balcony. So the tiles are laid correctly on the balcony:
Tiles for the balcony
When buying the tiles for the balcony, you should remember that the tiles are exposed to all weather. Even in winter, tiles for the balcony must be frost-proof. If you ask for frost-proof outdoor tiles in a tile trade, you will be shown tiles which, according to current standards, will withstand fifty changes of frost and dew. These tiles have a high density and therefore can not absorb more than 3% of water.
Which materials are suitable?
Suitable tiles are z. B. made of stoneware, a ceramic with a water absorption of less than 3%, which has a low porosity and is therefore frost resistant. Stoneware has a higher density than stoneware and better mechanical strength, almost all tiles for heavy-duty areas are therefore made of stoneware.
By definition, porcelain stoneware has a water absorption of less than 0.5% and a high breaking strength, making it also frost-proof. There is also natural stone as a tile for the balcony, but here you have to inquire about the technical properties in terms of water absorption and strength exactly. Because natural stones can have very different technical properties with almost identical appearance; The corresponding technical data are also very different, the very different sensitivities are not apparent here the optics.
Another material can be cast stone. This one-layer or multi-layered, made of concrete core or facing concrete and using various additives, which can make it geignet for outdoor use - but do not have to! Pay attention to the guarantee and warranty information of the manufacturer.
For tiles for the balcony, it is still advisable to make sure that the tiles are provided with a surface structure that makes them non-slip even when wet. Because tiles on the balcony are now often wet, you could save yourself with nonskid tiles evil slips.
Lay tiles on the balcony correctly
Almost more important than choosing the right tiles, however, is the type of installation that determines whether the frequent temperature changes will damage the substrate, which will then cause damage to the flooring.
Before laying, check that your balcony has the required slope of 1.5 to 2% per meter. This is not always the case, with a balcony that has just been built, you may be able to ask for a remedy from the screed paver; it could then possibly drag the slope into the screed.
If this is not the case, you would have to work in the incline during the course of your floor construction. Depending on the available construction height, a slope compensation made of special screed can be applied or you can use foam boards with a built-in incline.
Prepare underground
Then you should first ensure that no moisture can penetrate the underground when laying tiles on the balcony. Not even if any cracks in tiles or joints pass moisture undetected. Because if that happens for a while, a permanent structural damage could be the result, without you notice it in time.
The substrate should therefore be sealed very carefully. First you have to fill in all visible cracks for this purpose. When the putty has dried well (cover when it is raining), a sealing slurry is applied to the floor according to the package instructions. Usually, the floor must be moistened beforehand.
Such a sealing slurry causes a pore-filling seal of the treated component, he also has to dry thoroughly and is therefore applied in layers after curing of each previous layer. When the first layer has dried, all joints in the floor / wall area are provided with sealing tape. Then you should apply at least one more layer of waterproofing mud.
How many layers of waterproofing you apply depends on the conditions on your balcony. It can be difficult z. B., if your balcony door opens to the outside, but the concrete slab of the floor when building the balcony was set too high, then the overall height of the entire floor covering could exceed the threshold height of the door. As a result, the balcony door would not open.
Installation method - how are you?
If such an inconvenient case occurs for you, you should consult with a tiling master of your confidence before starting the project. No recommendable solution is the laying in the thin-bed process, with which indoor wall tiles are laid. Because one-component thin-bed mortar would have to dry completely after laying.
This is almost impossible to do when laying in the spring or fall, because at these times moisture would always penetrate through precipitation or from the ground. Then the tiles would later detach from the ground again. In addition, frost-resistant porcelain stoneware tiles due to their low porosity z. B. the disadvantage that the cement paste of the thin-bed mortar does not adhere well to them, they can be installed only with a special, plastic-coated tile adhesive in a not too thin layer.
The next layer of your balcony floor construction should therefore consist of a special floor adhesive or fluidized bed mortar, which has a pourable consistency. Only this way you can lay your floor tiles cavity-free, this is a complete wetting of the bottom is required.
The tiles are now placed in the mortar bed, you should always create a tile directly to the adjacent and then push them away from the neighbors again. In this way, you create a joint without swelling up between the tiles mortar mass of the lower layer. If you have prepared the right amount of substance for each tile with the trowel, you also have the certainty that you have laid the tiles cavity-free.
At the end
When the fluid bed mortar has dried covered, the joints can be filled. Again, you need a suitable for outdoor use material that can withstand the temperature differences and does not let water through.
An alternative for balconies without sufficient slope or with a very uneven surface could be that you lay the tiles on the balcony on a pedestal. The laying of balcony tiles on a grit bed or on mortar bags is conceivable, the structure is not very straightforward in both types of installation.
