Lay treadplates in the lawn

The Content Of The Article:

Frequently committed paths - for example, from the garden gate to the front door - are usually paved flat, which is time-consuming and relatively expensive. For less used garden paths, there are inexpensive alternatives: tread plates, for example, you can lay without cement and elaborate substructure. Their course can be easily changed in retrospect and the material costs are low.

Treadplates are a simple and attractive solution if you use the same paths in the turf more often. As soon as unsightly bleak trails appear, you should think about the installation of a treadmill path. Installed at ground level, the plates do not interfere with mowing, as they can easily be run over - this also applies to the robotic lawnmower. Choose sturdy plates that are at least four inches thick for your step plates. The surface should be rough so they do not get slippery when wet. Let us advise you on your purchase. In our example, natural stone slabs were made of porphyry, but much cheaper are square concrete slabs.

First, step off the track and lay out the boards so you can easily step from one plate to the next

Then measure the distance between all plates and calculate an average value by which to align the tread plates. The so-called step size of 60 to 65 centimeters applies as orientation for the distance from the center of the board to the center of the board

First, mark the outlines of each plate with a few spade cuts in the lawn. Then first put the treadplates aside again

In the marked areas, prick off the turf and lift the holes a few inches deeper than the plates are strong. You should later, despite the substructure at ground level in the lawn and must under no circumstances survive, so they do not become trip hazards

With a handstamper you now compress the subsoil. This will prevent the plates from sagging after installation

Fill a hole of about three to five centimeters in thickness as a substructure into each hole and level the sand with a trowel

Now place the footboard on the sand bed. As an alternative to sand, grit is suitable as a substructure. He has the advantage that no ants settle under it

A spirit level indicates whether the plates are horizontal. Also check that the stones are at ground level. If necessary, you will have to remove the footboard again and balance the base by adding or removing sand

With a rubber hammer, you can now tap the plates - but with feeling, because especially concrete slabs break easily! This closes small cavities between the foundation and the stone. The plates are better and do not tilt

Refill the gap between the plates and the lawn with soil. Lightly squeeze or sludge the soil with a watering can and water. Then sweep the plates clean with a broom

For a seamless transition between stones and grass, you can now sprinkle new lawn seeds on the ground and press well with your foot. Keep seeds and germinating plantlets slightly moist during the first few weeks until the grass has sufficient roots

This is how the finished path from treadplates looks like: Now it will not be long before the trail in the turf is green again
