Because the trees should be inflicted only small wounds.The bigger the wound, the greater the risk that it will rot or that fungi will invade. If you cut regularly from the beginning, you will always remove very thin branches. If the cut is neglected for a long time, you eventually have to cut away thick branches, which the tree can really suffer from.
