Laying turf - step by step

The Content Of The Article:

While lawns in the private garden used to be sown almost exclusively on site, a strong trend towards turf - the so-called turf - has been evident for some years now. Spring and autumn are the optimal seasons for laying green carpets.

Buy turf

Turf is used by specialized nurseries, the turf schools, on large areas until the turf is sufficiently dense. Then the finished lawn is peeled off and rolled up with special machines including a thin layer of soil. The rolls contain one square meter of lawn and, depending on the manufacturer, are 40 or 50 centimeters wide and 250 or 200 centimeters long. They usually cost between five and ten euros. The price depends heavily on the transport route and the ordered amount, because the turf is transported by truck to pallets directly to the installation site, as it should be laid no later than 36 hours after peeling. If the area does not finish on the day of delivery, you should store the remaining lawn unrolled so that it does not rot.

Step by step: laying turf

Prepare the ground for the turf

Search roots and stones

First loosen the ground with the tiller (left) and then collect stones and roots (right)

Especially on Neubaugrundstücken the floor of construction machinery is often highly compacted and should first be thoroughly loosened with a tiller. In the hardware store, you can usually borrow appropriate equipment. If you want to renew an existing lawn, you should first remove the old sod with the spade and compost. For heavy soils, you should immediately incorporate some building sand to promote permeability. Collect tree roots, stones and larger clods after soil loosening. Tip: Just dig in the unwanted components somewhere on the later lawn.

Level the ground with a rake

Roll on the ground

Then level the loosened soil with a rake (left) and compact it with a lawn roller (right)

With a wide rake, you can now level the surface. At the same time the last stones, roots and clods are collected and removed. Rolling is important so that the soil regains its required density after loosening. Equipment such as hoes or rollers can be borrowed at the hardware store. Then balance the last dents and hills with the rake. If possible, you should now rest the floor for a week to sit down.

Sprinkle blue-grain

Lay turf roll

Take out a mineral fertilizer (left) and lay the turf (right)

Before laying the roller turf, apply a mineral fertilizer (for example, blue grain). It provides the grasses with nutrients in the growing phase. At one corner of the surface you start to lay the roller turf. Lay the pieces of grass together without gaps and avoid cross joints and overlaps.

Cut off roll edge edges

Roll on turf

The turf can be easily cut with a knife (left). Then the entire surface is rolled (right)

With an old bread knife, cut the turf pieces to match the edges. First set the waste aside - it may fit elsewhere. The new lawn is pressed with the lawn roller so that the roots have a good contact with the ground. Traverse the surface in both longitudinal and transverse tracks. When rolling, be sure to only enter the areas that have already been compacted.

Water turf well well

Water turfs

The finished turf needs a lot of water, so it grows easily

Immediately after laying, water the area with 15 to 20 liters per square meter. Also in the following two weeks, the fresh turf must always be kept root-deep moist. Carefully you can commit your new lawn from the first day, but fully loadable, it is only after four to six weeks.

Advantages of turf

The biggest advantage of the roller turf is the quick success: in the morning there was still a bare area of fallow land, in the evening a lush green lawn grows, which can already be entered. In addition, there are initially no problems with weeds, because the dense sward does not allow any wild growth. Whether this remains so, however, depends crucially on the further lawn care.

Disadvantages of turf

Also, the disadvantages of a Rollrasens should not be concealed: Above all, the high price deters many garden owners, because a 100 square meters large lawn area including transport costs with about 700 € to book. Qualitatively good lawn seeds for the same area cost only about 50 euros. In addition, the laying of turf compared to the lawn sowing is real bone work. Each turf roller weighs 15 to 20 kilograms depending on the water content. The complete lawn must be laid on the day of delivery, because the lawn rolls can turn yellow and rot very quickly because of light and lack of oxygen.
Conclusion: Rolling lawn is ideal for owners of small gardens who want to use their lawn quickly. If you want a big lawn and have a few months time, you should better sow your lawn yourself.
