Flame weeds properly - Is burning prohibited?

Gas bottle to burn off

The application is very simple and basically always the same for all types of fire equipment. Nevertheless, there are differences between the individual device types. The following is a general guide to flaming. However, it is essential to also observe the manufacturer's instructions and the operating instructions.
1. Connect gas cylinder / cartridge
In the first step, the device must be connected to a gas bottle or cartridge. Small gas burners can usually be connected directly to a gas cartridge. For larger burners, the gas hose is first connected to the pressure regulator. If a pressure reducer is not integrated directly on the device, a regulator on the gas cylinder is important because it regulates the gas supply. No matter which variant you use, it is always important to check the connections for leaks, so that gas does not leak in the wrong place by mistake.
2. Ignite gas
Not all devices ignite the gas in the same way. Some devices are equipped with an automatic ignition (piezoelectric). For other burners, ignite the propane carefully with a match or lighter (preferably a lighter). In this case, first of all the gas tap of the gas cylinder is turned on and then the regulator on the weed burner is regulated to the lowest level. The control level is increased only if the gas does not ignite at low level.
3. Flush the weeds
Once the gas flame burns, weeding can begin. In order to remove the weeds between the paving stones, you only have to direct the flame directly over the weeds or moss a couple of times.

In order to work as effectively as possible, the cells of the plants must be destroyed. Too little heating does not damage the cells sufficiently. Too long heating is not desirable because of the high time and cost. For this reason, the so-called finger pressure test is the most important control measure when weeds abrade. After the heat has been applied, use two fingers to squeeze any green leaves together. If your fingerprint remains clearly visible, the treatment time, the gas pressure and the burner setting are sufficient. If the fingerprint does not leave an imprint on the sheet, it must be treated longer or the gas pressure increased.

Important factors

If you want to abrade weeds with a suitable device, you should keep in mind a few important things that can have a big impact on your success.
1. Effective radius
With a flaming device, only the above-ground parts of plants can be destroyed. The roots of the corresponding plants, however, remain undamaged in the soil and can drive out after some time. In many cases, therefore, either a multiple flaming after each about two weeks or alternatively a removal of the roots by hand is necessary. The smaller and younger the unwanted weeds, the more effective the method.
2. Weed species
In general, seed weeds are very sensitive to heat, especially in early stages of development (up to four leaves). Weeds with a leathery or hairy surface, on the other hand, withstand a lot of heat. With grasses the vegetation point lies in the soil and is therefore quite well protected. That's why they go out quickly after flaring. Larger plants should be mechanically removed in advance. Little sensitive to heat are:
  • Nettle (Urtica)
  • thistle
  • Purslane (Portulaca)
  • Marsh cress (Rorippa)
  • Dock (Rumex otusifolius)
  • Quecken (Elymus)
  • Annual bluegrass (Poa annua)
Tip: With grasses and other well-rooted plants, it is helpful to repeat the flaming after two weeks.
3. weather conditions
The smaller and drier the plants are, the more effective the shocking heat of the burner. Moisture or dew drops on the leaves delays the effect of heat on the cells. Depending on the device variant (especially with laterally open devices), the effect in wind is severely limited. Favorable conditions:
  • dry weather
  • little wind
  • preferably work on hot days
  • Do not burn off in the early morning or late evening

Advantages of the method

Weeds burn up

Weed flare offers a number of advantages as it is an effective thermal type of weedkiller.
1. Fast and effective
By hand, the weeds in the joints between the stone slabs are very difficult to remove. By flattening with a suitable device this process is carried out in a shorter time. Under optimal conditions, the efficiency is 100%.
2. Environmentally friendly
The flaming method does not use chemicals or any other means, such as salt or vinegar, that could endanger soil and groundwater. There are no residues left.
3. Nontoxic
In this type of weed control only liquefied gas is burned, so that in addition to water and carbon dioxide usually no other compounds. In case of contact or ingestion by animals or small children, therefore, no health risk is to be feared.
4. Biologically harmless
Flame-retardants are preferred when an area is managed according to biological (ecological) criteria. With the necessary caution and the appropriate precautions can also be treated vegetable beds.
5. Practical and back-friendly
Household scavengers are designed to be easily operated standing up. So an hours-long, kneeling posture is not necessary.

The weed killing by flaring not only benefits. The disadvantages include:
  • relatively high energy consumption
  • high carbon dioxide emissions for large areas
  • Caution is advised when handling gas and naked flame
  • Beneficials in the soil can be endangered (only in the top soil layer)
Tip: Flame the weeds in warm and dry weather, at which time there are fewer beneficials near the surface. They retire because of the unfavorable conditions in deeper layers. Thus, they are less at risk.

Different models

It is usually a question of the area on which the weeds are to be flamed, whether and which type of flaming equipment is suitable for use on one's own property.
1. Mobile flammable devices with cartridge
Weed burners operated with a gas cartridge are only suitable for small areas. Because of the size of the burner and the limited amount of gas in the cartridge, a large-scale flattening is not possible. However, this variant makes it possible to work more precisely. Although the flame temperature is slightly lower than that of large appliances, it is completely sufficient to destroy the weeds.
2. Large, powerful devices with gas cylinder
For the large-scale flaming of weeds, the variants with gas cylinder are better. The devices themselves are a bit more expensive and you also need to get the propane gas bottle and move it over the property.
In principle: The larger the area, the sooner high-performance flame-retardants with a large gas cylinder pay off. The smaller devices are usually sold as a complete set, so with a burner and a smaller gas cartridge. For larger devices you can usually buy the burner part including about five meters of gas hose. The gas cylinder and possibly the pressure reducer are to be procured separately.

Electric burners

If weeding out weeds with a gas burner seems too dangerous, we can also use weed burners that are powered by electricity. Gas fired scavengers work at higher temperatures, so they are more effective. Good, powered Abflammer reach a heat ray of about 650 degrees. At this temperature, the unwanted herb between the joints can be almost eliminated as with a conventional Abflammgerät. However, it has to be taken into account that the complete destruction of the weeds can take a little bit longer.
Among the few legally permitted methods against weeds on paved areas and sidewalks, apart from mechanical methods, only thermal processes such as flaming are included. Flushing weeds is a very effective and environmentally friendly method. However, only if certain rules of the game are adhered to. The drier and smaller the unwanted weeds are, the more effective this type of weed killing is.
