Many have to stand in their garden a garden shed, garden pavilion or a parasol, which should donate shade on sunny days. However, anyone who wishes to have something original for their garden can, for example, also build a vine arbor. This can look very different in the garden. It can for example:

  • and / or serve as a shadow donor.

As the name implies, the wooden vine arbor is built mainly from the raw material wood. And also as a floor covering, a wooden terrace floor can be used. However, it is important that you make sure that there is enough ground area around the vine arbor so that you can plant a correspondingly required number of grape vines, depending on their size.

If you stretch metal cords or metal ropes next to a few load-bearing wooden beams in the roof area of ​​the vine arbor, the vines can easily run along them and give your vine arbor a perfectly green roof.

Important: When building the grape arbor, you must attach great importance to the stability, because in the future you often have to climb around on the roof to fix shoots.

Made of metal vineyards usually have a lawn or a stone floor. In the specialized trade you can buy for this purpose also appropriate metal pavilions, which are outstanding good as Weinlaube usable.

These pavilions must be well anchored in the ground and planted with vines all around. The great thing about such a metal vine arbor: the bar distances here are usually so small that you do not have to insert any additional trellis aids.

" Tip:

You can also shade an existing terrace or balcony with fast-growing grapevines. So you do not have to build or buy a suitable rack beforehand. So that would be the cheapest option to build a grape arbor.

If you have a covered terrace, then you should check if the roof is stable enough. Because as already described, you have to fix the shoots and also for the pruning sometimes on the roof.

Plant a vine arbor

Select and plant varieties:

The centerpiece of a vine arbor, of course, are the all around planted vines. And here you have a completely free hand, because you can have both only one, but also many different varieties ranked at the same time - e. blue and white grapes.

If you have chosen one or more grape varieties, you can plant them. However, spring is the ideal time of grapevine planting - after the ice saint!

" Tip:

In the entrance area, you can also plant climbing roses instead of grapevines, resulting in a more varied flower picture.

Attach grapevines:

So that the vine branches up to the roof, you must only the so-called old wood at the post moor (bind). As a result, the new shoots, which are up to 6 meters long, first rise steeply and can be fixed piece by piece to the trellis with special plant wires or plant clips.

As soon as the vines first bear fruit, the shoots become heavy and settle almost by themselves on the roof surface. Once that's done, you need to fix it carefully. After a few weeks, the tendrils intertwine and ensure a shady spot.

" Tip:

If the grapevines bear too many fruits, then you should cut off a few grapes in good time, so that the remaining fruits can grow larger and more juicy.

Cut back vines:

Of course, a certain time after the harvest, you must cut back the grapevines of the grape arbor. However, this cut should not be made until February / March - depending on the weather and the risk of frost.An advantage is then that the vines at this time for a long time no longer carry leaves and thus the individual shoots are clearly visible.
