But there are also a few rules that differentiate between a balcony of a rented apartment and the balcony on your own home. These too will be considered in more detail below.
A solid ground is the most important requirementA balcony is exposed to all weather year round. Therefore, it has been provided in its construction with an internal moisture barrier. It ensures that no rainwater or thawing snow from the balcony can penetrate into the underlying areas. If moisture spots or rust are already visible on the underside of the balcony on the steel structure, this floor must be rehabilitated before a wooden floor is laid on this surface. What is initially laminated by the wood surface and looks beautiful, would lead a few years later to total demolition of the balcony.
Old tiles, on the other hand, can remain underground if they are not already loose but only torn.
Often the existing, old floor is almost flush with the room behind it. Therefore, the height of the substructure of a wooden floor must be kept as flat as possible.
Arrangement of floorboards in longitudinal or transverse direction? Each balcony must have a slope and almost always has a drain in the roof drainage. Before laying a wooden floor, this direction of inclination must be checked. Usually it leads away from the house wall to the front of the balcony. Your gradient should be 1 to 2 percent. Floorboards with grooves must never be laid horizontally. The grooves must always be in the direction of the slope, so that the rainwater can run off. As a result, the substructure must be longitudinal. However, this is associated with the problem that now the rainwater would accumulate behind the slats of the substructure. Therefore, suitable ventilation options must be created that differ significantly from the balcony of a rented apartment from that of your own home.
The laying of a balcony-wooden floor in a rented apartmentThe tenant may make changes to the building fabric only in consultation with his landlord. Most of the time this wants to maintain its unified image throughout the rental property. In addition, it makes sense to be able to take such a wooden floor with a later move. The substructure is preferably made of impregnated roof battens. Is a laying in the longitudinal direction and thus required transversely to the direction of fall, these battens must be placed on 2 to 3 millimeters high "feet", preferably made of plastic discs. The rainwater can thus drain under these battens. In the transverse direction these "feet" are not mandatory.
When laying it is important that all around a four-centimeter wide gap remains on all four sides, from which the rainwater from the plank boards can drain into the drainage of the balcony. So that the finished floor can not slip, the substructure must therefore abut flush at several points. Balcony boards made of hard or precious wood are almost always offered in a size of 14.5 x 2.5 cm. In order to avoid deflections, the distance between the bases should not exceed 60 cm.
The planks are laid on each support by screwing with two screws each on the battens. Stainless steel screws are used, as with brass screws, etc., the wood on the screw holes would gradually discolour. The holes are pre-drilled with a twist drill according to the screw thickness and bevelled so far with a countersink that the screw heads are flush with the wooden surface at the same height. The floor boards must be laid with gaps of approx. 2 mm to each other to ensure drainage and ventilation of the subfloor. For even distances spacer blocks provide during assembly.
The laying on your own balconyIn this case, the substructure is preferably fixed. Instead of the "feet" made of plastic spacer blocks are glued or screwed onto the previous floor. However, the moisture barrier of the balcony must not be pierced. Then a medium gravel layer of "feet" is applied to the floor. It always ensures a dry underlayer, including the ventilated laying of the wooden floor.
Then the laying of the plank boards, as already described in the rental balcony.
The cleaningEvery wooden floor should be swept regularly. It can also be vacuumed with a vacuum cleaner. But then only with a brush attachment, so as not to damage the wood seal.
Wood floors that have just been oiled or waxed should only be slightly dampened similar to cleaning laminate. Sealed floors, however, may be treated normally. Stains are removed with a cloth soaked in paraffin.
So your wood floor on the balcony remains beautiful in the long term.
Tips for a wooden floor on the balconyWould you like an easy-to-clean floor on your balcony? If you think that the excellent tiles do not fit very well with your beautiful wooden floor in the interior, perhaps a wooden floor on the balcony is the right alternative.
A wooden floor on the balcony continues the warm radiance of the floor indoors. It also feels really warmer than stone floor when it's colder outside. A wooden floor can also make a balcony attractive again, which is provided with a tiled floor whose best days are quite a while ago.
You can save yourself the work of tearing it out and possibly discussing it with your landlord if you simply lay a wooden floor over the old tiles on the balcony. The following alternatives are available:
Laying floorboards on the balconyThere are special balcony hardwood, suitable woods are z. Teak, bamboo, eucalyptus, acacia and bankgirai, Almendrillo and Cumaru. For some of these woods, however, you must ensure that the wood is labeled with an FSC seal of approval if you value environmentally friendly sources.
Domestic woods, which are resistant to the weather on the balcony, are z. B. Douglas fir decking, chestnut planks, oak planks and robinia or larch decking. Then you can still choose planks made of pressure impregnated wood, perhaps from beautiful native pine, if you are sensitive to certain wood preservatives, you should ask exactly what substance was used in the boiler pressure impregnation.
Balcony planks can be laid without damage to the old floor, so you can take the new flooring with you when moving, it can be easily removed. To do this, lay your new balcony deck floating, so the floor boards are not firmly connected to the balcony floor, the old tiles will not be damaged. Any wood for outdoor use is dependent on wood protection by material and construction anyway, and in the floating installation, you can also bring the same constructive wood protection.
Floating installation - that's how it works
- To do this, lay the balcony boards on squared timbers, on which the planks are bolted, so that the new flooring forms a unit.
- If your floor boards are corrugated, they should be laid in the direction of the slope, so the squared timbers are laid along the wall of the house.
- From time to time, you should plan gaps between the square timbers, which ensure that water can drain away to the front.
- Smooth floorboards, which are laid with a tongue and groove to a flat surface, can be laid longitudinally along the wall of the house. The squared timbers below are then laid in the direction of the slope, not quite to the front of the edge, so that excess water can flow into the drain at the edge.
- If the drain is not on the front edge of the balcony, you will need to change the substructure and decking accordingly so that any accumulated water will drain from all points
Further laying instructionsOn one or more sides of your grille screwed together should always be a distance from the boundaries, so that the water can run off, which runs along the components. Here you must attach your new balcony floor on the sides, so that your floor construction can not slip, z. B. with stainless steel angles.
To screw the individual planks, you should of course also use stainless steel screws that do not rust. Hardwood floorboards need to be pre-drilled so they can be screwed together well. The finished new balcony floor is now treated with the wood preservative appropriate wood protection, if you would like to get along without any chemicals, oil your balcony planks with a suitable wood species to the wood.
If you do not want to hide an old tiled floor, laying in principle is the same, you just need to be sure that the existing balcony floor is really waterproof.
Laying on drainage layerIf your balcony has only a very small slope, which leads to stagnant water in the rain, the squared timbers of the substructure can not actually be laid directly on the balcony floor. Even if you make sure that larger volumes of water can run to drain anywhere, the lower squared timber would then often be in the wet and begin to rot so quickly. Then you have to build a frame under the square timbers, which rests on the lower edge on a support, which establishes a distance to the ground.
In this frame, a drainage layer of gravel or sand is given, only then come the camp woods. They never lie in the water, the drainage layer ensures that every drop of water runs off or dries out. The tiles are laid on the square timbers as described above.
Wooden tiles as a balcony floorOf course, instead of planks, you can also attach wooden tiles to the wooden planks, which then usually have to be arranged differently. The wooden tiles are usually 30 x 30 cm in size, they are also offered in weather-resistant woods or specially treated for outdoor use.
Or you opt for wood tiles with click system, a very comfortable, but not the cheapest solution. On a level surface with the right slope, the wooden tiles fitted with a plastic lower part with a click system can be easily laid directly on the floor. First comes a plastic grid that is simply clicked into each other and laid out, then the click tiles are just as easily connected to this plastic grid. The wooden tiles will never get "wet feet".
Tips for cleaning wooden floors
- If a wooden floor has been waxed or oiled, you should be very sparing with water, so that your wooden floor does not swell up.
- Sealed wood floors can withstand more water, but only if the seal is complete, which should be checked regularly.
- A wooden floor is regularly swept or vacuumed with the brush attachment on the vacuum cleaner, stains should first be treated with a damp or paraffin-soaked cloth and rub dry if necessary. There are also various tricks for the removal of stains from a wooden floor, also scratches in the wooden floor can be made almost invisible by the correct action.
