Wood or plastic windows?Choosing the right material for windows is not easy. Wood or plastic are currently very popular. Finally, there are both variants in different color variations and both wood, as well as plastic windows are now priced affordable.
It is therefore necessary to compare the advantages and disadvantages of both materials in window construction before purchasing.
Advantages and disadvantages of wooden windows
Wood is a natural material and therefore always has an ecological advantage over plastic. In addition, it fits in almost all facade pictures due to the variety of colors that is now available on the market.
Despite the high density and strength of wood, windows made of this material always remain breathable and thus contribute to a good indoor climate. Wood in the window construction is very robust and retains its shape even in particularly adverse conditions.
In addition to the breathability, wooden windows also have the property of being particularly heat-insulating, which in turn has a positive effect on energy consumption and thus on the wallet.
For some construction methods, for example with a rustic looking look, wood is the only conceivable solution for a coherent overall picture. Thanks to the multicolored paints and glazes, however, wooden windows can be individually designed according to your own wishes.
And the biggest advantage of wood windows is that their lifetime has never been surpassed by any other material. Of the
comparatively high price is thus relativised in the course of the life years of a wooden window.
However, wood as a material in window construction has just as many disadvantages. So wood is the most nurturing material that you can choose. The wooden frame must be oiled at least twice a year so that the wood does not become brittle and crack.
In addition, wooden windows require a new protective glaze every two years and even a new coat of paint every five years. The financial advantage of longevity is thus reflected in the investment costs of care
leveraged, adding a massive amount of work. Last but not least, the financial aspect is the point why people are less and less opting for wooden windows. The initial investment costs are significantly higher than those of plastic windows.
Advantages and disadvantages of plastic windows
Plastic is now ranked one of the materials in window construction. The clear advantages of this material justify this. Thanks to plastic compounds that have matured more and more, the service life of plastic windows has improved massively in recent years and has come close to that of wood. At the same time plastic is much cheaper than wood.
So there is the combination of similar life with less investment - an advantage that brings plastic on and on to the front.
Plastic is also less susceptible to the effects of weathering or corrosion. In contrast to wooden windows, plastic windows only lose their color appearance in a much more protracted process and are far less time-consuming than wood with regular cleaning, maintenance and care work.
If necessary, a new coat of paint will be necessary, unlike wood, but not every five years, but at the earliest after ten years. Oiling the window frame is completely eliminated. Also in the heat and sound insulation plastic is the wooden windows in every way.
Critics complain about plastic windows, however, the ecological aspect. In addition, it can come with plastic windows by static charge to an increased attraction of dust.
This, in turn, over the years causes the color of plastic windows to change. Also solar radiation leads to color changes on the plastic. When it comes to painting, plastic has to get behind wood. While there are many different paints in different colors for wooden windows, the choice of plastic is very limited and the cost is relatively intense, as shown in the section "Painting plastic windows properly".
