Lean, well-drained soils in e.g. Rock gardens prefer the Mediterranean-derived wormwood herb clearly. From the end of April to the end of May, you can sow the seeds in a full sun. However, do not cover them with soil, as these are germinating seeds.


Alternatively, you can sow wormwood from late August to late September to ensure a harvest of the herb, which grows to an average of about 120 centimeters in the coming year.

After a germination period of two to three weeks, tender wormwood plants in the garden bed make themselves felt, which you can move individually from a height of about 7 centimeters (pay attention again to a sunny spot here). For a normal household, the rearing of two wormwood plants is sufficient.


Vermouth lightens with the years. You should sow it at least every four years or replant it by rooting in autumn.

Already after the first harvest (approximately from the end of July) you should cut back the vermouth clearly, in order to promote a strong new shoot. Ideally, you should then dry the harvested leaves and the tips of the flower spikes in the shade before you process them further.


From July to September, the wormwood produces yellow, almost inconspicuous flower spikes. These should only be processed from the second harvest.

Otherwise, the robust vermouth is actually quite undemanding in terms of care. Only in the fall you can fertilize him biologically by composting.
